The Bureau of Industry and Security of the US Department of Commerce has extended for forty-five days the temporary general license for Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and its non-US affiliates on the Entity List. Huawei and sixty-eight of its non-US affiliates were placed on the Entity List in May 2019, following a determination by the US that the company may be engaged in violations of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, and conspiracy to violate the Act by providing financial services to Iran. Forty-six more non-US affiliates were added to the Entity List in August 2019.
According to the BIS, the extension is necessary to allow telecommunications providers to operate existing networks in the US, particularly in rural areas, while they continue to identify alternative sources to replace Huawei technology. The new temporary general license will remain in effect until April 1, 2020.
