The Department of State announced on March 17, 2020 that it designated a senior official for the Assad regime for deliberately preventing a ceasefire from being implemented in northern Syria, resulting in almost a million people being displaced and in need of humanitarian assistance. The designation is made pursuant to Executive Order 13894, an order specifically targeted at those directly or indirectly responsible for obstructing the ceasefire in northern Syria. These sanctions will remain in place until the Syrian regime and Russia adhere to UN Security Council Resolution 2254. As a result of this designation, all US persons are prohibited from transacting business with this individual, and all property interests in the US are blocked. Furthermore, any non-US person engaging in transactions with the designated person risk having sanctions imposed upon them.
