On June 24, the California Secretary of State issued a memorandum confirming that the advocates behind the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) have gathered sufficient signatures to add its successor, the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), to the November Ballot. If successful in November, the CPRA would amend the CCPA’s privacy and data security requirements that went into effect earlier this year. Should the CPRA be adopted by California voters, it would come into effect on January 1, 2023, but would apply to any personal information collected from January 1, 2022. Of note, it would also extend certain exceptions for employee data and business-to-business — exceptions currently set to expire on January 1, 2021 — until January 1, 2023.
