On August 7, 2020, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that MODOK LLC, a California-based Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) voice service provider, will begin to wind down operations and leave the telecom industry, as part of a settlement it reached with the Michigan AG’s office. According to the AG’s Office, MODOK routinely carried illegal robocalls regarding Social Security and vehicle-warranty scams from foreign countries, into the US and on to Michigan residents. The settlement marks the first time a state attorney general has shut down a VoIP service provider and barred its owners from working in the industry.
