U.S. designates research company for supporting chemical weapons research and development in Iran

On July 12, 2024, the U.S. Department of State designated the Hakiman Shargh Research Company for supporting Iran’s chemical weapons research and development.  According to State Department Spokesperson Mathew Miller, the designation follows repeated calls by the United States for Iran to comply with the Chemical Weapons Convention (“CWC”) and was imposed during the week that the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons was meeting.

The sanctions were imposed pursuant to Executive Order 13382, which targets those involved in the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their supporters.  As a result of this designation, all property and interests in property of the designee within the United States or within the possession or control of a U.S. person is blocked, and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions involving the designated person.  Entities owned 50 percent or more by one or more blocked persons are also blocked.
