On January 8, 2020, the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Department of the Treasury sanctioned Taban Deng Gai for his involvement in serious human rights abuses, pursuant to Executive Order 13818 and the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act. Deng has served as South Sudan’s First Vice President since July 2016. According to OFAC, Deng’s actions have fostered division and distrust and have contributed to the failure to implement the May 2019 peace agreement. In addition, Deng was reportedly involved in the disappearance and execution of a human rights lawyer and a member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – In Opposition.
