On October 8, 2024, the Council of the EU announced that it extended restrictive measures currently in place under the Sudan sanctions regime for an additional year, until October 10, 2025. The decision to prolong the restrictive measures was made based on the fighting that has continued to take place in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces (“SAF”) and the Rapid Support Forces (“RSF”) and their respective affiliated militias. The Council’s actions were taken shortly after High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell issued a statement on September 22, 2024, condemning the dramatic escalation of fighting in El Fasher in southwestern Sudan that was reportedly instigated by the RSF against the SAF. In the statement, Borrell also called for the RSF to stop the siege and de-escalate the fighting immediately.
On the same day, the Council prolonged restrictive measures against ISIL/Da’esh and Al-Qaeda for an additional year, until October 31, 2025. The ISIL/Da’esh and Al-Qaeda sanctions regime complements the restrictions imposed by the UN Security Council. The European Union also reiterated its commitment to stand against anyone who threatens peace and security around the world by supporting or engaging in acts of terrorism or spreading terrorist propaganda.
Also on October 8, 2024, the Council extended restrictive measures imposed in view of the situation in Nicaragua for an additional year, until October 15, 2025. The European Union also reiterated its commitment to support the Nicaraguan people and their efforts to defend democracy, the rule of law and human rights. The European Union also called for the restoration of fundamental freedoms in Nicaragua, the release of the remaining political prisoners, and the return of international human rights organizations to the region.
According to the Council, each of these sanctions regimes subjects listed designees to asset freeze and travel bans in the European Union and prohibits EU persons and entities from providing funds to economic resources to them.
