European Council extends DRC sanctions for an additional year

On December 8, 2023, the Council of the European Union renewed restrictive measures related to the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (“DRC”) for an additional year, until December 12, 2024.   The Council adopted Council Decision (CFSP) 2023/2768 to extend the measures after determining that sanctions objectives had not been met.  Autonomous individual restrictive measures were imposed for the first time by the Council in 2016 to address human rights violations and efforts to obstruct peaceful elections in the DRC.  The DRC sanctions regime currently subjects 24 individuals to an asset freeze and travel ban and prohibits individuals and entities in the EU from providing funds, financial assets or economic resources to them or for their benefit.
