The Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Department of the Treasury has designated five officials associated with Nicolas Maduro, pursuant to Executive Order 13692. The individuals include the head of the Venezuelan National Intelligence Service, the commander of the Venezuela Directorate General of Military Counter-Intelligence, the director of the Venezuelan National Police Special Actions Force, and the president of the state-owned oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PdVSA). In a statement announcing the designations, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin explained, “We are intent on going after those facilitating Maduro’s corruption and predation, including by sanctioning the President of PdVSA and others diverting assets that rightfully belong to the people of Venezuela.” Property and property interests of the designated individuals in the US, and entities in which they have 50% or greater ownership will be blocked pursuant to the designations.
