US Department of State and Government of Kyrgyzstan announce the repatriation of stolen assets stemming from corruption by the former president’s regime

In a joint statement with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, the US Department of State announced the repatriation of $6 million which Maxim Bakiyev, the son of Kurmanbek Bakiyev, the country’s former president, stole from Kyrgyz state authorities and banking institutions.  The funds were the subject of a forfeiture order entered in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, following the successful criminal prosecution of Eugene Gourevitch for insider trading.  The government of Kyrgyzstan confirmed its commitment to use the repatriated assets to fund social projects, including improving access to healthcare and constructing water supply facilities, and to strengthen anti-corruption and transparency efforts.
