On May 22, 2020, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control announced the designation of two Nicaraguan government officials for their support the Ortega regime. The designations are pursuant to Executive Order 13851 “Blocking Property of Certain Persons Contributing to the Situation in Nicaragua.” The designation stems from the Ortega regime’s efforts to suppress any political opposition since April of 2018, resulting in the imprisonment and death of hundreds of people, thousands of injuries, and over 100,000 refugees fleeing the country.
As a result of these sanctions, all US property for the designated persons is blocked, and all transactions and dealings with US persons are generally prohibited. In addition, any entities owned, directly or indirectly, 50 percent or more by sanctioned individuals is also blocked.
