US telecommunications company resolves sanctions investigation

Comtech Telecommunications Corp, a maker of telecommunications equipment headquartered in Melville, New York, reported on September 17, 2020 that it had reached an agreement with the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control to resolve an investigation into export transactions to Sudan.  In October 2014 following an internal investigation, Comtech disclosed to OFAC that modems sent to a Canadian customer by the company’s subsidiary, Comtech EF Data Corp. was incorporated into equipment that was ultimately shipped to the Sudan Civil Aviation Authority at a time when US sanctions prohibited US persons from engaging in transactions with Sudan.

The settlement requires Comtech to implement enhanced compliance, to create a new position of Chief Trade Compliance Officer within the company, and to pay $894,111 to OFAC.
