On November 3, 2020, the US Securities and Exchange Commission awarded $28 million to a whistleblower who voluntarily provided significant, original information that led to a successful SEC enforcement action.
According to the SEC’s Order, the whistleblower reported significant information to the SEC which caused an unnamed company to initiate an internal investigation, and also caused the SEC to open its own investigation into that company. The whistleblower’s assistance included an interview, testimony, and identification of a key witness, and saved the SEC time and resources.
The SEC has awarded nearly $715 million to 110 individuals since issuing its first payment in 2012.
