UK implements new Myanmar Sanctions Regulations

On April 29, 2021, UK Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation and the Foreign Secretary announced the implementation of new Myanmar (Sanctions) Regulations 2021 (SI 2021/496) under the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018, to replace and revoke the Burma (Sanctions)(EU Exit) Regulations 2019 (SI 2019/136).  Accordingly, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has updated the UK Sanctions List and the Consolidated List to incorporate this regulation change.  It’s important to note that all 23 entries in the consolidated list were amended and remain subject to an asset freeze.

The new Myanmar regulations authorize the freezing of assets and economic resources for certain persons, entities or bodies that engage in activities that undermine the democracy and rule of law in Myanmar; repress the civilian population in Myanmar; commit serious human rights abuses (or obstruct an investigation into the same); violate international humanitarian law in Myanmar; obstruct a human assistance activity in Myanmar; or engage in any activity that threatens the peace, stability or security of Myanmar.
