On August 9, 2021, the UK Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation and HM Treasury announced that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office updated the UK Sanctions List to include Mikhail Safarbekovich Guteriev, a Russian businessman and one of the main private investors in Belarus for his support of the Government of Belarus and Belarus president Alexander Lukashenko, who is responsible for serious human rights violations and the suppression of democratic processes in Belarus. The restrictive measures, that involve freezing of funds and economic resources of listed persons, are imposed in accordance with The Republic of Belarus (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 (SI 2019/600) under the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018.
