OFAC designates three Cuban officials for unlawful treatment of Cuban protestors

On August 19, 2021, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned three Cuban officials pursuant to Executive Order 13818, which builds upon and implements the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, targeting those who commit serious human rights abuses and corruption around the world.  OFAC designated two officials with the Cuban Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR) and one official with the Cuban Ministry of Interior (MININT) for their participation in the unlawful suppression and detention of protestors in Cuba.  The MINFAR officials were designated under EO 13818 as leaders of an entity that had engaged, directly or indirectly, in serious human rights abuses, while the MININT official was designated as a person who acted on behalf of MININT, an entity previously designated by OFAC pursuant to EO 13818 in January 2021.

As a result of these designations, all US property and interests in property is blocked, and transactions with sanctioned persons and entities are generally prohibited.
