Former president of commercial flooring company indicted in money laundering conspiracy

On September 7, 2021, a federal grand jury in US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois indicted Michael Zmijewski, former President of Mr. David’s Flooring International LLC, on one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.  Mr. David’s, a commercial flooring company based in Chicago, pleaded guilty on August 30, 2021 to conspiracy to launder funds and conspiracy to rig bids and fix prices in the commercial flooring industry. 

Zmijewski is the sixth person to be charged in connection with the an ongoing federal antitrust investigation.  According to the indictment, from 2013 to 2018 Zmijewski conspired with others to pay Carter Brett, an account executive with a large flooring manufacturer, kickback payments in exchange for discounted flooring products.  To conceal the nature of the payments, the kickbacks to Brett were deposited into a bank account held by a shell corporation established by a relative of Brett.

Zmijewski’s arraignment is scheduled for September 23, 2021.
