UK amends DRC-related sanctions to include persons who threaten medical and humanitarian workers

On September 13, 2021, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office issued an Amendment of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 (SI 2021/1041), which implements UN Resolution 2582 (2021) adopted on June 29, 2021, to extend DRC-related sanctions until July 1, 2022.  The amendment also expands the criteria used by UN Sanctions Committees to add persons and entities to the UN DRC sanctions list to include persons who plan, direct, sponsor or participate in attacks against medical or humanitarian personnel.  This amendment enhances the UN Sanctions Committees’ ability to impose financial sanctions for DRC-related violations and will come into force on October 7, 2021.
