On April 27, 2023, the UK and Switzerland imposed sanctions upon Maulawi Rajab and Sultan Aziz Azam after the UN Security Council ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee sanctioned the two on April 26, 2023 pursuant to paragraphs 2 and 4 of Resolution 2610 (2021). Rajab was designated for being the senior leader of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan (“ISIL-K”), and Azam was designated for being a spokesperson for ISIL-K. The two ISIL-K officials were designated by the UK Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation pursuant to The ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida (United Nations Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 (SI 2019/466), which subjects them asset freezes and travel bans in the UK.
