United Nations issues Libya-related humanitarian travel exemption and extends Libya arms embargo

On May 31, 2024, the United Nations Security Council Committee granted Mohammed Muammar Qadhafi, the eldest son of Libya’s former leader Muammar Gaddafi, a six month humanitarian travel exemption, effective from June 1, 2024 to November 30, 2024.  The exemption was issued pursuant to Resolution 1970 (2011) concerning Libya.

On the same day, the United Nations Security Council also adopted Resolution 2733 (2024) in order to renew measures to implement the arms embargo against Libya for an additional year.  In particular, the extended measures authorize Member States, acting nationally or through regional organizations, to inspect vessels off the coast of Libya that are suspected of being in violation of the embargo.
