US and UK agree to establish a data bridge

The US and UK recently announced that both countries have committed in principle to establish a data bridge that will enable safe and reliable cross-border data flows between participating organizations in both countries.  The US Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, and UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, Rt. Hon. Chloe Smith MP, released a joint statement on June 8, 2023 announcing that agreement in principle had been reached between UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and US President Joseph Biden.  According to the joint statement, the UK intends to establish a “data bridge” extending the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (a separate process currently being finalized between the EU and US) to also cover the transfer of UK personal data to the United States.  The completion of the “data bridge” will be subject to the UK’s assessment of US data protection laws and practices, and contingent upon the US designation of the UK as a qualifying state under Executive Order 14086.
