EU adopts new sanctions aimed at Iran’s military support for Russia and designates 6 individuals

The EU recently established new sanctions to address Iran’s military support for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.  The new framework, established by the Council of the EU on July 20, 2023, prohibits the export of components used in the construction and production of unmanned aerial vehicles (“UAVs”) from the EU to Iran.  It subjects designees to asset freezes and travel bans and prohibits persons in the EU from making funds available to them.

On the same day, the Council of the EU adopted Council Implementing Regulation 2023/1496 and Council Decision (CFSP) 2023/1501 to designate 5 Iranian individuals for their roles in providing the Russian military with Iranian UAVs.  These designations were imposed under existing sanctions regimes that target actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.  The Council also adopted Council Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/1498 and Council Implementing Decision (CFSP) 2023/1503 to impose Syria-related sanctions upon an Iranian individual who supported an air defense systems project in Syria.
