On July 15, 2019, Basil Al Jarah, who served as Unaoil’s partner in Iraq, pleaded guilty to five counts of conspiracy to give corrupt payments, in contravention of Section 1 of the Criminal Law Act 1977 and Section 1 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906. The SFO began investigating Unaoil in 2016, and has focused on potentially improper payments in connection with the award of oil pipeline supply and installation contracts in southern Iraq. Three other men have also been charged with conspiracy to make corrupt payments in the case.
