On October 1, 2019, Italian oil company Eni SpA said in a press release that it had received a declination from the US Department of Justice, which had, since Eni’s voluntary disclosure in 2014, been investigating allegations of corruption surrounding the Oil Prospecting License for block 245 in Nigeria, and in connection with the award of contracts in Algeria to Eni’s former subsidiary, Saipem. Eni remains under investigation by Italian prosecutors for conduct in multiple jurisdictions, and the Company and several of its executives are being sued in London by the Nigerian government.
