UK proscribes Hamas in its entirety

The UK banned Islamist terrorist movement Hamas in its entirety from the UK on November 26, 2021 after Parliament approved the order submitted by Home Secretary Priti Patel on November 19, 2021.  Hamas, a group that has called for the establishment of an Islamic Palestinian state under Sharia law as well as the destruction of Israel, has already been sanctioned in its entirety by the US and EU. The UK made a distinction between the political and military wings of the organization and proscribed Hamas’ military wing in March 2001.  The UK’s recent proscription of Hamas’ political wing makes it a criminal offense to be a member of the group or invite support for the group.  Those found guilty could face up to 14 years in prison.
